In theory the top 7 in points can still mathematically make it to the Championship....in theory! Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon seem to have a lot better record at Phoenix International Raceway then the other 5. Out of 12 starts Jimmie Johnson has managed to maintain a 6.00 average finishing position. Wrapped up in that is 2 wins (1 of those at the race earlier this year), 5 top 5\'s and 8 top 10\'s. Get this, no DNF\'s. In fact Jimmie\'s worst finish at Phoenix is 15th which he has hit twice. Jeff Gordon has 19 starts at Phoenix with an average finishing position of 8.53 including 1 win, 8 top 5\'s and 15 top 10\'s. 1 DNF in all 19 starts and that was due to handling back in 1993 where he finished 35th. Other than that his lowest finishing position has been 17th back in 1995. Jeff does not have a real chance of catching Jimmie Johnson in my opinion, but he can wreck Carl Edwards and and Greg Biffle\'s hopes of getting to the top. CARL EDWARDS 2nd -106 Carl Edwards has not done bad at Phoenix in the past. He had a DNF back in 2007. Besides that his first race at Phoenix back in 2004 was not good. Other than that he has all top 10 and top 5 finishes except for one 11th places finish. 3 top 10\'s, 5 top 5\'s and an average finishing position of 14.5. While Carl Edwards numbers may not look as great as Jimmie Johnson\'s Carl is on a war path and ver determined. He has won the last 2 races of the season at Atlanta Motor Speedway and Texas Motor Speedway. I doubt Jimmie is relaxing at all knowing that Carl Edwards is gunning for him. GREG BIFFLE 3rd -143 Greg Biffle is a little farther back in points. but if Carl and Jimmie have bad days then Greg Biffle could really make up some ground. Unfortunately Phoenix is not a great track for Greg Biffle and he may end up loosing ground at this track. Biffle has an average finishing position of 16.44 out of 9 starts. That figures with no wins, only 2 top 5\'s and 3 top 10\'s. He only has 1 DNF in the mix so that does not even help figure into his numbers. I am not expecting to see a lot from Greg Biffle this weekend although he did finish 9th earlier in the season at Phoenix. Out of the rest of the Championship drivers only 1 other really caught my eye and the was Tony Stewart. He has an average finishing position of 9.77 out of 13 starts. 1 win, 6 top 5\'s and 8 top 10\'s along with only 1 DNF shows that Stewart has been pretty good at Phoenix. But mathematically Tony Stewart can not get to the top spot in 2 races. But I know he will be racing his butt off to give Gibbs a top finishing car. You can see all the drivers stats from their driver pages. TRACK STATS - Phoenix International Raceway Most wins - All-Time Dale Earnhardt Jr. - 2 Jeff Burton - 2 Kevin Harvick - 2 Jimmie Johnson - 2 Davey Allison - 2 Matt Kenseth - 1 Kurt Busch - 1 Kyle Busch - 1 Jeff Gordon - 1 Tony Stewart - 1 MOST POLES - All-Time Ryan Newman 4 BEST AVERAGE FINISHING POSITION - All-Time Alan Kulwicki - 5.20 Jimmie Johnson - 6.00 Benny Parsons - 8.00 Jeff Gordon - 8.53 Mark Martin - 9.17 Dale Earnhardt - 9.54 Tony Stewart - 9.77 Davey Allison - 11.00 Jeff Burton - 11.11 Denny Hamlin - 12.00 WINNERS FROM THE POLE Jeff Gordon - 2007\";s:4:\"link\";s:35:\"http://racingnewsdigest.com/?p=5579\";s:6:\"author\";s:42:\"mike@racingnewsdigest.com (Pratt, Michael)\";s:7:\"summary\";s:3276:\" I was taking a quick look at the top 7 in points. But I have been working hard to get this site optimized and I recently just moved if off of my Ryan Newman site. MESSAGE BOARDS GO TO MESSAGE BOARDS First of all this is probably my smallest accomplishment for this site but I would like to encourage people to come and start participating in the new message boards. I had started with a different format, but I settled on this format. I hope you enjoy them. DRIVERS PAGES Last night I spent a lot of hours getting the drivers page optimized so that now they are real fast. They were timing out and now there is not that problem. On the drivers page you can find your drivers career stats, individual track stats, past races and more. Still to come on the drivers pages? On item that I will probably have implemented in a week or so is a drivers track type performance (like Superspeedways). TRACK PAGES SELECT A TRACK TO LOOK AT The track pages will show you all the winners at a track. Who has the most wins and the most poles. Also, this one is kind of fun but it will show you starting positions 1-43 and that starting positions average finish. Right next to that column is another that has the same information sorted by the average finish. This column is nice to see what the best average finishing position at the track is and then what that average\'s starting position is. Still to come on track pages? Well, I have information on most of the cup tracks like location, completed, seating capacity, ect. I just need to get it all entered for all the tracks. Also I need to make it easier to bounce around a track page from Cup stats to Nationwide or Truck stats. That should be implemented VERY SOON. I don\'t think all the info will be on one page though. NEWS HEADLINES News headlines is why this site got started. I am importing a lot of news headlines. My original purpose was to use this to make it easier to sort through all the news. Anyway, I have it set so that only my write up (AND HOPEFULLY GUEST WRITES -- CONTACT ME) will show on the home page. All the news headlines can be viewed HERE. And the headlines on that page should take you straight to the original source! CAR # HISTORY Take a look at the history of your favorite car #. There are a couple of small bugs here. For instance it does not like to display anything for the car # 0. I am working on that. Other than that you can see a break down of that car # and the drivers that have raced in that number. You can then drill down even farther and see a drivers history in that car number. RESULTS AND STANDINGS Of course we have all the race results and standings. Visit our RESULTS page or one of the standings pages to see whats going on. HELPFUL TOOLS You\'ll notice that all drivers names and track names have links to that drivers page or that tracks page. NOT ALL the drivers have links, but I am continually adding more. RSS FEEDS I have set up RSS feed for each driver. So if you like RSS feeds you can get one is tailored to your driver. Now, this is a pretty good system but it is not perfect. The other sites RSS feeds that I am importing don\'t always contain all of an articles content. What a drivers RSS feed is doing is searching through the articles that I am importing and looking for that drivers name. The problem is that your driver may be mentioned in an article but if he (or she) is not mentioned in the first paragraph or the headline, then you may not be notified through that feed. Make sense? I hope so. It is working for my purposes right now. ADVERTISERS Well of course we are accepting advertisers. I have a set up an advertisers page as a guideline. That is all it is - guideline. Nothing is in stone. LINKS I am trying to build a very comprehensive LINKS list. If you look off to the left you will a break down of these links. This is a very new site so I don\'t have many. And I imagine that I will eventually have to have a separate page for each one. But help me to build this list. Do you know of some links. LET ME KNOW. This is not just for NASCAR. Any racing series will be cool. We are hoping to start providing news in other series of racing as well. DO YOU KNOW GOOD SOURCES FOR OTHER RACING SERIES? One other item that I will doing in the off season is building the NASCAR Cup portion of the database for stats from 1949 (I think it is) instead of the current 1975. Also, if you know where to get other racing series complete race results so that I could a build a database from it, please let me know. But don\'t expect overnight results :) . Dig around and let us know what you think. Let us know if you find some problems or would like MORE information in some areas. We may or may not be able to accommodate, but we will try. Thank you and we hope you enjoy! Greg Biffle and Jeff Burton are all still in \"easy\" striking distance. They could mathematically be in first place in just one race. Carl Edwards and Clint Bowyer could be there in just 2 races. Realistically Jimmie Johnson could have a bad day. Qualifying was once again rained out so the field will be starting in order of owner points. In the Chase I have mixed feeling about this. I think it is a great benefit for the Chase contenders it is nice not to have to possibly start in the back of the field and maybe get into trouble. But on the other hand, they should have to if that is the kind of car they have that weekend. Ultimately I would like to see qualifying happening and of course after 10 qualifying sessions being rained out this year we are hearing cries that NASCAR should have 2 chances for people to qualify. I agree. And on the whole qualifying subject I think it needs to be changed. Forget the top 35. I think it should be MAYBE top 20 (even less). Let everyone qualify there way in. To many good drivers are not getting into races because of the top 35 rule. And that does not mean those drivers are bad drivers. There are plenty of drivers in the chase right now that are horrible qualifier like Jeff Burton. And drivers that are not in the chase that are fantastic qualifiers like Ryan Newman. ATLANTA Now Jimmie Johnson is pretty good at Atlanta Motor Speedway but this is not his best track as far as his average finishing position of 9.64. That is the top average finishing position of all the Chase contenders this year and the 3rd best all time. The scary part for the rest of the Chasers is that he has 3 wins out of 14 starts and only 1 DNF. Jimmie will be a contender for the checkered flag on Sunday if he can stay out of trouble. Greg Biffle is going to be hurting at Atlanta with an average finish of 14.82. He has no wins, 3 top 5\'s and 6 top 10\'s. Jeff Burton (who is my pick (or hopeful for winning the championship) is not good at all at Atlanta. He has and average finishing position of 16.54 with no wins and only 7 top 5\'s and 13 top 10\'s out of 28 starts at Atlanta. The good news is that he is a finisher here though. Out of those 28 starts he only has 3 DNF\'s at Atlanta. Carl Edwards could be the one to give Jimmie a run for his money. He has an average finishing position of 12.88 and 2 wins out of his 8 starts along with 4 top 5\'s and 6 top 10\'s. Only 1 DNF for Edwards as well. Don\'t look for much out of Clint Bowyer this weekend. He has an average finish of 14.00 and 3 top 10\'s out of 5 starts. The 3 top 10\'s to 5 starts ratio is not bad really. This is Kevin Harvick\'s worst track as far as average finish is concerned. 23.27 is what he has averaged over 15 starts. He also has 1 win, 2 top 5\'s and 3 top 10\'s. Cross Harvick off your list as a possible winner this weekend. Jeff Gordon has 32 starts here and an average finish of 12.84. 4 wins, 13 top 5\'s and 20 top 10\'s makes Gordon look pretty good as a possible winner this weekend as well. Out of all active drivers Jeff Gordon has the most all time wins. Tony Stewart does not look like a bad possibility of a checkered flag this weekend either. Out of 19 starts at Atlanta he has 2 wins, 8 top 5\'s and 13 top 10\'s. That brings him to an average finish of 12.00. Stewart has finished 2nd in the last 2 races at Atlanta. Dale Earnhardt JR. has 18 starts here with 1 win, 8 top 5\'s and 10 top 10\'s. His average finish here is 11.72. JR. finished 3rd here earlier this year. The remaining 3 Chase contenders don\'t really have much to mention. Matt Kenseth, Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch do not have any where near good stats here. Kyle Busch is the only one with a win but he is also has the lowest average finish of the 3 - 19.88. So, who\'s your pick for this weekends race. Kind of looks like it is down to Hendricks again. I am not a Jimmie or Jeff fan. So Naturally I will be rooting for Dale Earnhardt JR. Ultimately I want the this to be a very close chase season. I don\'t want 1 or 2 drivers basically having the championship wrapped up at this point. I want it to come down to the last lap of the last race and have it between at least 6 or 7 drivers. So, while I don\'t want to necessarily root for any drivers to do bad during a race, I would like to see Jimmie Johnson finish towards the rear and some of the the Chasers in the back to make big points gains. The rules violations just keep on coming. The latest: the No. 83 Red Bull Toyota driven by Brian Vickers. NASCAR said Wednesday that when it inspected Vickers\' car after Sunday\'s race at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway, it found the exterior sheet metal was thinner than required under the rules. NASCAR wouldn\'t elaborate, but the modification presumably made the car lighter, faster and more nimble aerodynamically, any of which is an advantage. Vickers started that race 17th and finished 11th, which left him 15th in the Cup point standings.Vickers\' crew chief, Kevin Hamlin, and his car chief, Craig Smokstad, were suspended indefinitely. Hamlin also was fined $100,000. Vickers was docked 150 driver points. Red Bull\'s Dietrich Mateschitz was penalized 150 owner points. Red Bull said it would not appeal. Vickers joined a long list of drivers whose teams broke the rules in the last 18 months: reigning champion Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Carl Edwards, Ryan Newman and Martin Truex Jr.Would NASCAR suspend a driver, even for one race, to deter others from doctoring their cars? It\'s a step NASCAR officials have said they would not rule out. But for now, there seems to be a double standard at work. By suspending crew chiefs and deducting points from drivers, NASCAR can rightly say justice has been dispensed. But the driver is back in action the following week, to the benefit of his team, his sponsors, his fans, track operators, TV networks carrying the races, and, yes, NASCAR as a whole. Now, pretend for a moment that a Johnson, Gordon, Earnhardt or Edwards was ordered to sit out next Sunday\'s race because his car didn\'t pass inspection at the last race. Much of NASCAR\'s popularity is built on the individual popularity — and brand recognition — of its drivers. Some fans drive hundreds of miles to see their favorite driver. Or consider the corporate sponsors. What if all their sales pitches and other hospitality events planned for a race were negated because the driver had been sent home?
