Looking At The #39 And #14

August 20th, 2008 | Categories: Ryan Newman/Team News, YR-08

I realize that the past performance of a car number has no bearing on what a current driver could do in that car number.

Next year Ryan Newman will be racing for Stewart-HAAS racing in the #39. At least that is how it is looking at the moment. His owner/teammate Tony Stewart will be driving the #14.

So I decided it would be fun to look up how the the #39 and #14 have faired over the years. I looked up the numbers on my other site RACINGNEWSDIGEST.COM where the stats for the Cup Series go back to 1975.

#39 – Ryan Newman
The #39 only has 47 Cup starts. The main stat that sticks out here is that with 47 Cup starts the #39 car has 32 DNF’s. WOW!. It also has 2 top 5’s and 2 top 10’s. As I am sure you can imagine the 32 DNF’s really hurts the #39’s average finish—-28.49. And there really is not excuse for the average starting position of 27.09.

NO POLES YET for the #39, I am sure the RocketMan can turn that around.

Also no wins for the #39.

The #39 was raced the most by Blackie Wangerin with 26 starts. Of course he also has 20 DNF’s and no top 5’s or 10’s.

That was the only car Blackie raced between 1977 and 1984.

Other drivers of the #39 have included Scott Pruett, Reed Sorenson and others.

Some of the good news is that the #39 does not have a lot of history. The last time this car number was raced was in 2005 by David Stremme, Scott Pruett and Reed Sorenson for a total of 6 races. So this is a fairly “unused” car number that Newman could call his. No one has really made anything of it.

#14 – Tony Stewart
Tony Stewart’s car – the #14 has a lot more history behind it.

The #14 has 366 starts, 7 top 5’s, 45 top 10’s and 137 DNF’s. Th #14 has an average starting position of 24.37 and an average finishing position of 26.59.

Also no poles or wins for the #14.

Some of the more active drivers in the #14 include –
Coo Coo Marlin, Sterling Marlin, AJ Foyt, Ron Hornaday, Terry Labonte, John Andretti, Rick Mast, Larry Foyt, Stacy Compton and Mike Wallace.

The #14 has been relatively active since 1975. The last full season it ran was in 2006 and in 2007 it ran 19 races. Both those years the car number was drove my Sterling Marlin.

Sterling Marlin has the second most races in the #14 with 62 and Coo Coo Marlin has the most with 65 races.

Once again those stats only go back to 1975 and I should be expanding that to 1949 in the coming weeks, months…..or so. You can also look up all these driver at RacingNewsDigest.com as well.
